Why is the Google algorithm so important?

Finding useful information on the ­World Wide Web is something many of us take for granted. According to the Internet research firm Netcraft, there are nearly 150,000,000 active Web sites on the Internet today [source: Netcraft]. The task of sifting through all those sites to find helpful information is monumental. That's why search engines use complex algorithms -- mathematical instructions that tell computers how to complete assigned tasks.

Google's algorithm does the work for you by searching out Web pages that contain the keywords you used to search, then assigning a rank to each page based several factors, including how many times the keywords appear on the page. Higher ranked pages appear further up in Google's search engine results page (SERP), meaning that the best links relating to your search query are theoretically the first ones Google lists.

For Web page administrators, being listed prominently on Google can result in a big boost in site traffic and visibility. In 2007, Google surpassed Microsoft as the most visited site on the Web [source: The San Francisco Chronicle]. With that much traffic, getting a good spot on a Google SERP could mean a huge boost in the number of site visitors.

Google's keyword search function is similar to other search engines. Automated programs called spiders or crawlers travel the Web, moving from link to link and building up an index page that includes certain keywords. Google references this index when a user enters a search query. The search engine lists the pages that contain the same keywords that were in the user's search terms. Google's spiders may also have some more advanced functions, such as being able to determine the difference between Web pages with actual content and redirect sites -- pages that exist only to redirect traffic to a different Web page.

­Keyword placement plays a part in how Google finds sites. Google looks for keywords throughout each Web page, but some sections are more important than others. Including the keyword in the Web page's title is a good idea, for example. Google also searches for keywords in headings. Headings come in a range of sizes, and keywords in larger headings are more valuable than if they are in smaller headings. Keyword dispersal is also important. Webmasters should avoid overusing keywords, but many people recommend using them regularly throughout a page.

What began as a project helmed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students in Stanford University's Ph.D. program, is now one of the most influential companies on the World Wide Web: Google. At first, the students' goal was to make an efficient search engine that gave users relevant links in response to search requests. While that's still Google's core purpose today, the company now provides services ranging from e-mail and document storage to productivity software and mobile phone operating systems. In less than a decade, Google evolved from a two-man enterprise to a multibillion-dollar corporation.

Google supported an open technology approach to wireless service in which consumers could use any device with any provider rather than face limited choices determined by the provider and its preferred vendors. In order to participate in the auction, Google had to prove it was ready to meet the reserve price for the spectrum: $4.6 billion. Ultimately, Google didn't win the auction. But the company still achieved its main goal -- Verizon, which won the bid, must follow the open technology approach Google wanted.

Google's name is a variation of the word "googol," which is a mathematical term for a one followed by 100 zeros. Page and Brin felt the name helped illustrate Google's monumental mission: Organizing billions of bytes of data found on the Web.

1. The First Google Doodle


Google’s famous homepage “Doodles” (the changing Google logo graphics) are well known and enjoyed by millions around the world as a way to mark an event or anniversary. But did you know that the very first Google Doodle was designed as a kind of “out of office” message?
In 1998 Brin and Page took the weekend off to go the Burning Man festival in Nevada. The Burning Man doodle (shown above), was designed by the Google guys and added to the homepage to let their users know they were out of office and couldn’t fix technical issues like a server crash.

2. Interesting Figures from the Google IPO


While the initial price for Google’s stock at its Initial Public Offering in August 2004 is an interesting stat in itself, there’s more to the story. The opening price for Google’s stock was $85 per share. At the time of writing, the stock price was $483 but has soared as high as $600 in the past year, making GOOG a rather nice investment for many.
A bonus factoid from Google’s IPO process is the value Google stated it hoped to raise on its S-1 form — as much as $2,718,281,828. It may just look like a string of numbers to non-mathletes, but 2,718,281,828 is actually the first ten digits of the mathematical constant ““e”,” showing that even as their company was planning to go public, the Google guys could still geek out with a bit of numerical humor.

3. The First Google Storage Was Made From LEGO


As proud hosts to Google back when it was still a research project, and known as “BackRub,” here Stanford now showcases the original Google storage from way back in 1996. It’s made up of a whopping 40 GB (less than a modern iPod) and it’s made from, as fans of the building bricks will be delighted to see, LEGO. It even hash funny mini-figures on the top.
Legend has it that the reason for the LEGO construction was that the Google guys needed an easily expandable, and cheap way to house 10 4 GB hard drives, and LEGO fit the bill. Whether the primary colors of the bricks used were the hues that went on to inspire the Google logo’s design is up for debate, but we’d guess it wasn’t just a coincidence.

4. Google’s First Ever Tweet


Google’s first ever Twitter post was as satisfyingly geeky as you could hope for. The message, sent in February 2009, reads “I’m 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010.”
For anyone not fluent in binary, here’s a hint — it’s a well known phrase from the company’s homepage. Got it? Yep, it reads: “I’m feeling lucky.”

5. Google Rents Goats


This one isn’t actually one of Google’s infamous April Fools’ Day jokes: Google rents out goats. Yes you read that right. It rents goats from a company called California Grazing to help cut down the amount of weeds and brush at Google HQ.
The operation of 200 goats (plus herder and a border collie) is kind to the environment, and as Google puts it: “A lot cuter to watch than lawn mowers.”

6. Google’s Impact on Language


While you’d think the news that the Merriam-Webster and Oxford English Dictionary adding “google” as a verb to their lexicons in 2006 would thrill the search engine, Google was actually none too pleased with the development.
“We’d like to make clear that you should please only use ‘Google’ when you’re actually referring to Google Inc. and our services,” the company wrote in a blog post at the time.
The rationale behind the semantic displeasure was that Google had “a brand to protect,” and feared Google would “slip from trademarked status into common usage.” Now, four years later, we have to say Google was fighting a losing battle — just ‘google it.’
However, we’ve found some other Google-themed linguistic delights for you — a Google staffer is commonly referred to as a “Googler,” while a new team member joins as a “Noogler.” Nooglers also used to wear a colorful hat with a spinner on top. 7. Google Is Dog-Friendly


Google is a super dog-friendly company. It proudly names “company dogs,” like Yoshka (described as a “free-range Leonberger”) pictured above. Yoshka accompanies Urs Holzle, senior VP operations and Google Fellow to the Googleplex. Less senior staff are also allowed to bring their dogs to the office.
According to Google’s “Dog Policy”, one indiscretion too many on the Google carpets, or aggressive behavior, means Lassie will have to stay at home in the future. Strong bladdered and friendly canines are more than welcome across the campus.
Unfortunately, cats are not quite as welcome. Here’s an excerpt taken directly from Google’s Code of Conduct: “Google’s affection for our canine friends is an integral facet of our corporate culture. We like cats, but we’re a dog company, so as a general rule we feel cats visiting our offices would be fairly stressed out.”

8. Google’s First Ever “Company Snack” Was Swedish Fish


Back in February, 1999, the chewy candy known as “Swedish Fish” became the first ever company snack (not counting beverages) that was ordered into the Google office.
Although a relatively small event, it has led to big things. Google is infamous in the industry for treating its employees to not just free drinks and snacks on tap, but full-on gourmet meals, three times a day at a plethora of on-site cafes and eateries, as well as regular BBQs during the summer.
Brin and Page have been quoted in the past as saying no Googler should have to go more than 100 feet for food, leading to snack-filled “microkitchens” that are liberally dotted around the Google offices.
In fact, the free food is said to be so tempting that Googlers risk the “Google 15,” similar to the “Freshman 15,” where they pile on weight soon after joining the company. Good thing they also have a Google gym.
Backing this up, here’s a stat from Google — “Bay Area Googlers consumed approximately 5,500 pounds of handmade chocolates from the snack bins in the microkitchens in 2007.” Wow.

9. The Google Logo Was Not Centered Until 2001


Google’s famously sparse homepage is considered a classic design in the online world. The Google logo, however, wasn’t actually centered on the page until March 31, 2001. As early users will remember, the homepage had a bias to the left-hand side, and even earlier — back in 1998 — Google sported a Yahoo-style exclamation mark.

10. Google Has a Company Dinosaur


By all accounts, there are many wondrous sights to be seen at the Googleplex, but one of the most arresting is surely the gigantic T-Rex skeleton — nicknamed “Stan” after a “real” dino found nearby — that looms menacingly at Googlers in Mountain View.
Joining Stan in the unique campus decorations is a scale replica of the SpaceShipOne, enormous Android-themed models, pink flamingos, a large LEGO man, Google-colored phone boxes and grown-up size ball pits. Facebook best place to work: Survey

NEW YORK: Facebook is the best large US company to work for, according to a survey by a career website.

The social network company placed ahead of Southwest Airlines and management consultants firm Bain & Company on the list compiled by Glassdoor, an online site where users publish feedback on employers.

Employees seemed most unhappy when there is poor communication in a company, while the most highly rated companies have "a very solid and distinct company culture," said Robert Bohman, Glassdoor's chief executive.

Glassdoor asked its users to rate their workplaces on such factors as pay and boss competency.

Placing fourth on the list was General Mills, and public relations firm Edelman was in fifth place.

Rounding out the top ten were Boston Consulting, software company SAS Institute, Slalom Consulting, online retailer Overstock.com and Susquehanna International Group, private equity investors.

Glassdoor said it compiled the survey based on some 150,000 employee reviews submitted during 2010 on companies with more than 500 employees.

'Facebook sales likely to hit $2 bn in '10'

NEW YORK: Facebook Inc is likely to generate 2010 revenue of about $2 billion, more than previously expected for the popular social networking site, Bloomberg reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.

Facebook's 6-year-old service, which ranks the world's largest Web social network with roughly half a billion users, posted 2009 revenue of around $800 million, Reuters reported earlier this year.

Facebook is privately held and does not publicly disclose revenue figures.

Bloomberg's story on Thursday said that 2010 revenue was previously expected to be closer to $1.5 billion, which still would have been nearly double 2009 sales. It now appears Facebook will reach $2 billion in sales faster than Yahoo Inc and at almost the same pace as Google Inc, the Bloomberg report said.

Microsoft Bing gets Facebook 'likes'

SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft on began rolling out Bing upgrades that included showing which query results were "liked" by friends at online social networking hotspot Facebook.

The improvements came as the software colossus tried to wrest market share from the leading Internet search service Google.

"The core of our work addresses the fact that the Web is getting more complex and faceted -- not less," online services division senior vice president Satya Nadella said in a blog post.

"We are building new technologies that help Bing figure out what people like you are trying to do, and match that with the right experiences to help get things done."

Bing is expanding its partnership with Facebook, a California firm in which Microsoft owns a small stake, to show which links displayed in search results have been tagged as "liked" by friends at the social network.

Bing also updated its mobile applications for Internet searches on iPhone and Android smartphones with features that included being able to make restaurant reservations using OpenTable or order take-away food using Grubhub.

In a nod to the growing trend of location based services and advertising, Bing will also begin letting people "check-in" places using mobile devices.

A feature being launching in coming months will let users of Bing on desktop computers virtually step inside and take 360-degree ganders at restaurants or other venues.

Bing also made searches for online pictures more intuitive and better organized, according to Microsoft.

"We continue looking for new ways to bring more visual and social experiences to Bing and help make it the best place to make decisions and get stuff done," Bing team members said in a message announcing the upgrades.

Google relentlessly hones and improves its online search service with the aim of ramping up the speed and relevance of results.

In November, Google rolled out a new feature called "Instant Previews" that allows Web surfers to sample websites without having to click through to the pages.

"Instant Previews" came on the heels of "Google Instant," a feature launched in September that displays search results as fast as a user types.

Industry-tracker comScore on Wednesday reported that Google "powered" 69.2 percent of US search results in November, while 24 percent of online searches were powered by Bing, which handles queries at Yahoo! websites.

Google says sorry for Wi-Fi data grab

WELLINGTON: Internet giant Google said sorry to New Zealanders for collecting personal data from wireless networks for its "Street View" mapping service, in the latest in a series of apologies.

The company said it did not realise until earlier this year that cars it was using to photograph public streets were also gathering information known as "payload data" sent over unsecured Wi-Fi systems.

Unencrypted information sent on Wi-Fi systems that are not password-protected potentially contains personal information, including the content of emails.

Google said as soon as it realised its error, it garaged the Street View cars and began working with the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff on ways to address the problem.

"Our collection of payload data was a mistake for which we are sincerely sorry, and we'd like to apologise to all New Zealanders," Google said on its New Zealand blog.

Google announced in May that its Street View cars, taking photographs of cities in more than 30 countries, had inadvertently gathered data sent over unsecured Wi-Fi systems, sparking complaints by data regulators worldwide.

In Britain, Google agreed to delete private emails and passwords, while in Australia it was found to have broken privacy laws but no punishment could be imposed.

The company is being sued in the US, while in Germany it agreed to allow people to opt out of Street View over privacy concerns, in which case their houses would be pixellated.

On its New Zealand blog Google said the company had never used payload data in its products or services but acknowledged there was public concern about its actions.

"Some people felt we should have been more explicit about what we were collecting," it said.

"We also think we should have had greater transparency around our initial collection of publicly broadcast Wi-Fi network information. We're sorry for not realising this sooner."

Shroff welcomed Google's apology but warned its initial actions were "not good enough" when it collected the content of people's communications.

"It is important that Google makes sure that these mistakes do not keep happening," she said in a statement.

"For technology to be successful, people need to trust it. If they don't trust it, they won't use it."

Shroff said Google had committed to improving staff training on privacy issues and checking new products carefully before they were released.

The privacy commissioner referred the matter to police in June and specialist cyber crime officers reported three months later that they did not believe a criminal offence had been committed.

However, they said the case underlined the need for Web users to put in place security measures when using Wi-Fi systems.

Google to scan your body now

LONDON: After its controversial Street View programme, Internet search giant Google is all set to unveil a new browser that can map out the entire human body.

The high-tech 3D application, called Google Body Browser, has been hailed as a breakthrough in the study of anatomy that could revolutionise people's understanding of the human body and even fast-track medical research.

The application, yet to be released officially, lets one explore the human body in much the same way you can navigate the world on Google Earth -- a virtual globe, map and geographical information programme.

In 2007, Google introduced another application called Street View which provides panoramic views from various positions along many streets in the world.

About the development of the new application, Google has, until recently, been tight-lipped, but a new video has appeared on the Internet which provides a sneak peek at how the new tool will work, the Daily Mail reported.

"Google Body Browser also ushers in the introduction of brand new Internet technology called WebGL, that will allow complex 3D graphics to be used on normal web pages, without the need for specially adapted browser plug-ins like Flash or Java," said the report.

The video, shot on a mobile phone, shows an Internet developer from Google's WebGL research unit revealing the application to industry colleagues.

"One can quickly see the possibilities of how this could help anatomical education," a blogger, who witnessed the demonstration said he was excited by the browser's potential, was quoted as saying.

"Last year I got the opportunity to work on an open standards based web3D medical app for learning the bones of the body. After witnessing how that app really helped students learn the bones, I am sold on using web3D for medical education."

Ahead of its official unveiling Google has released a version available on WebGL-supported browsers or beta versions of Firefox and Google Chrome, which can be downloaded from the Google Body Browser site (http://bodybrowser.googlelabs.com).

WebGL is expected to become standard in new versions of most Internet browsers, including Firefox, to be released next year.

Google changes its algorithm again determines the link agreements, purchased, and misused, and decides to be ignored in its calculation of Page Rank.
